Chapter 14

As Samhain approached, so too did midterms. Brie spent all of her free time studying for her own midterms, as well as crafting the midterm for her class. It was the first time Dr. Fry had had her write the exam rather than just proctor and grade it.

It was incredibly nerve-wracking. Brie was trying to find a good balance between difficult questions and some easier ones so as not to completely tank everyone’s grades. So far, she had been through three versions, one that ended up being all no-brainer questions that anyone who showed up to class would know. Version two was so hard that she would have hated herself for even administering it. The current version was a little better, mostly multiple-choice, but she was trying to work in several explanatory questions and maybe an essay.

The shop wasn’t allowing her much time to work, either. With Samhain just a week away, the shop had become overwhelmingly busy. Regulars appeared several times during the week. New customers rushed in, frantically asking for things Brie had never heard of or to pick up orders. Brie barely had time to sit anymore. Even Ezra had abandoned most of his work in the Storage Room to assist customers with specialty items, the two of them dancing around each other, arms and fingers brushing as they grabbed packages.

Her hair, usually arranged in a curly wild halo around her head, was now wrapped into box braids and pulled back from her face. Her sleeves were always rolled to the elbow despite the cooling temperatures. The fragrant wind that always seemed to accompany her took on notes of spices and crisp apples.

“I can barely move from all the lifting and carrying granny has me doing. I swear it wasn’t this bad last year,” she whined to Brie for what seemed like the hundredth time that week, her head cradled on her arms across the counter. Brie just patted her friend’s head in sympathy.

“Do you need any extra hands? I would be happy to help in any way,” Brie offered. She would find the time to help Lily, even if there was little time left that wasn’t devoted to school or work.

Lily lifted her head and waved her off. “Don’t worry about it. You don’t really have the extra time, anyway. Besides, I already know this is going to be our best year yet; I’ve seen it. Sort of. It’ll all be worth it come this weekend. And after Samhain, I’m going to sleep for two days straight.” The two women shared a laugh, happy just to enjoy each other’s company for a few minutes.

“Lily, are you going to take the
